Derek Schraner
Derek Schraner is a writer, musician, producer, and instructor.

Chosen by the Market Guide as one of North America’s most promising young writers, he has authored several long-form works and poetry for various collections. He published an anthology, Past Fantasy, in 1990 and, thirty-five years later, in 2025, he returned to publishing with Hikikomori.

He obtained undergraduate degrees in Cinema Studies, English and Philosophy from the University of Toronto, as well as Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Media Production from Ryerson University. In his spare time, he embarked on several musical projects, including TDSF, Dead Face West, and Deus Ex Nihilo. His song “To Dive” inspired indie artist Neil Leyton’s music label, Fading Ways.

After spending some time teaching in Japan and podcasting in Ottawa, he returned home to Toronto. Time permitting, he and his partner blog about Canadian pop culture at geekvsgoth.com
